本研究者は2014年8月、庶民の日常言語、スワヒリ語での出版が盛んな国、タンザニアに赴き、読書事情把握のために、観察とインタビューによる調査を行った(科研費奨励研究 : 26910038)。結果、明らかになったのは次の4点であった。1. 経済的問題から庶民の読書は学校の中だけのものに留まり、趣味娯楽、実生活に必要な情報を得るためのものではない。庶民の多くが「本」と聞いてイメージするのは教科書である。2. 無償で幅広い読書を提供するべき図書館は有料制であり、その役目を果たしていない。3. 蔵書は海外から寄贈の英語の図書に偏り、スワヒリ語で可能な読書の幅は狭い。4. 司書のサービスは十分ではない。本研究の目的は、これまでの研究により明らかになった現地の読書環境の現状を基に、現地児童に対する幅広い読書機会の提供を目指して、図書館に望まれる教育支援を、図書館司書である研究者が検討・実施し、教育支援の在り方やその効果を明らかにすることであり、支援の効果は、1. 読書に対する児童の意識向上、2. 図書館サービスに対する司書の意識向上、の2点から調査する計画であった。本研究の目的を達成するために、1. 現地に赴いて研究者自らが試作したスワヒリ語の科学知識絵本を用いて、児童だけでなく親も読書の良さを実感できる親子参加型のおはなし会実施などの教育支援を行う。直後のインタビューに加えて、その後も毎日現場へ通い、児童の読書や司書のサービスの観察をすることにより支援の効果を調査する。2. 日本帰国後もWebサイト、Eメール、スカイプを用いた本の紹介により、児童の読書や司書への継続的遠隔支援を行い、その効果を調査する、という手順で研究を進める計画であったが、諸事情が重なり、現地調査を実施できず、計画期間内の研究遂行が困難となった。遠隔支援による調査のみでの研究続行も検討したが、現地では読書習慣が根付いておらず、まず現地で本を見せつつ読書ニーズを調査した上で遠隔支援を行う必要があると判断し、29年3月、本事業を廃止した。本研究の目的を達成することはできなかったが、調査の準備段階で行ったスワヒリ語による科学知識絵本の試作において、スワヒリ語の科学用語の不足が大きな障害になっていたことは、注目すべき点である。この点に気づいたことは今回の研究の成果であり、今後の研究に活かしたい。
