【研究の目的】アフリカでは珍しく, 庶民の日常言語であるスワヒリ語による出版が盛んに行われているタンザニアにおいて, 1. 読書環境の現状を把握し, 特に児童の読書の障害となっている要因を明らかにする. 2. 1で明らかになった現状を踏まえて, 現地図書館においてどのような支援が望まれるのかを検討・提案する.【研究の方法】現地の図書館, 書店, 学校を訪れ, 観察とインタビューにより情報を収集する.【研究の成果】収集した情報から, 現地庶民が「本=教科書」というイメージを持っていることが窺えた. 多くの庶民の読書は学校教育のためのものに留まり, 学校外で読書の機会をもつことは難しい. 「趣味のための読書」や「生活に必要な情報を得るための読書」をするという意識が庶民にはないようである. この現状をもたらしている要因としては, 「経済的な問題」「読書に対する理解の欠如」「スワヒリ語による出版事情」等が考えられる. 本来, 庶民の読書を経済的に支え, 幅広い読書の機会を提供し, 読書に対する意識向上を目指すべき図書館は有料制であり, その役割を果たしていない. 図書館蔵書の8割は英語によるものであり, 庶民の多くはそれらを理解することができない. また, おはなし会等, 読書意欲向上のための児童サービスもなされていない. 現地司書にはこのような問題に対処しようとする姿勢が見られず, 図書館の人材育成にも問題が感じられる. 調査から明らかになった現状をもとに, 筆者が司書として, 現地図書館に提案する教育支援は次の3点である. 1. 誰もが無償で通える小学校に司書が出張して, 教育支援を行う. 2. 児童の読書の幅を広いものにするために, スワヒリ語による科学知識絵本を試作する. 3. 児童だけでなく, 親にも読書の良さをアピールできるような親子読書会を企画する.
