本研究では、幼稚園の園児保護者の「持続可能な社会づくり」に対する理解の促進と態度の変容を目指したプログラムを開発、実施し、その効果を検証することを目的とした。その目的を達成するために、文献研究及び学会や先進園への視察を通して、プログラムに関する情報収集を行った。その結果、ESDの概念を知識として得ることにとらわれず、自らとかかわりのある場所や事柄と具体的にかかわる実践が有効であるとの学びを得た。その結果を受け、大学教員の指導も受けながら、保護者向けのプログラムを作成し、実施した。まず「座学を通した持続可能な社会づくり」として、保護者を対象に講演会を実施した。ここでは、なるべく保護者にとって身近に考えられる内容とした。さらに、「現場とのかかわりを通した持続可能な社会づくり」として、園児が遊んでいる幼稚園の森で、この森の生態系の話や園児の遊びを紹介しつつ環境整備を行う機会を三回もった。プログラム実施後、保護者を対象に内閣府が平成26年に行った「持続可能な開発のための教育(ESD)に関する世論調査」と同様の調査を実施した。その結果、内閣府が行った全国調査に比べ、ESDの認知度が有意に高く、「具体的な活動をイメージしづらい」という回答が有意に低かった。また「ESDに参加してもらうための効果的な取り組み」として、「テレビ番組や新聞記事などを通じた学習」という回答が有意に低く、自由記述で「自然と触れる」「地域の行事に参加する」という、参加型の回答が多く得られた。以上のことから、本プログラムは、単なる知識を得るのみでなく行動する人間を育成するというESDの理念に沿うものであり、保護者の「持続可能な社会づくり」に対する理解の促進と態度の変容に有効であることが示唆された。
