スーダン国立博物館には、1960年代のヌビア遺跡群救済キャンペーン等で出土した鉄製品が所蔵されている。本研究の調査研究対象とした鉄製品は、11遺跡、71点であった。出土地は、下ヌビア地域とメロエ地域に集中し、後者にはハルツーム市内の立会調査出土資料を含む。資料には、武器や毛抜きのような日用品もあるが、その大半は装飾品である足輪と腕輪であった。実測の結果、下ヌビア出土の足輪には2形式が認められ、輪状にする際に用いたあて具の痕跡が認められた。また、メロエ地域の出土の腕輪には3形式が認められ、ハルツームでの立会調査では下ヌビア出土の足輪に類似する資料が出土した。このことは、既存資料の実測調査でも、十分に鉄製品の多様性や製作技法の一端を復元可能であるということを示している。また、本調査に際し、鉄製品の博物館における収蔵環境や管理方法に関する課題も明らかにすることができた。極度に乾燥した環境は、決して鉄製品に不利ではないが、登録システムがアナログであることや梱包が不十分である点は、資料の活用に際し様々な問題点を孕んでいるのが現状である。近年、文化財分野では、SDGsの目標11.4「世界の文化遺産及び自然遺産の保護・保全の努力を強化する」が注目されつつある。収蔵資料には世界遺産出土資料もあることから、この目標を目指すことには異論はない。しかし20年間、経済制裁下にあったスーダンでは、経済のみならず、そのポジティブイメージの再構築こそが必要で、上述のような資料も、政治的・宗教的に中立的な観点から、その再構築に大きく寄与しうるのである。ただし、考古学や文化財学の研究成果を国際協力機関や現地政府に伝えるだけでは、問題の解決にはならない。むしろ、調査・研究のプロセス、それに派生する問題点を共有することの方が重要である。そして、そこにこそ、国際協力機関や現地政府との共通言語としてのSDGsの意義が存在するのである。
