项目摘要

自治を標榜していた旧制高等学校の寄宿寮は、戦時政策による生活の統制、自治の否定、学徒出陣・勤労動員による寮役員の交代や寮組織の再編等、さまざまな対応を迫られた。本研究では、昭和18年の高等学校令改正と同時に出された「高等学校修練要綱」による第五高等学校の寄宿寮「習学寮」への影響を明らかにすることを目的とした。このため、「高等学校修練要綱」前後の卒業生を中心に抽出し、昭和14、17、18、19、22、23年の卒業生10名に対して聞き取り調査を行った。聞き取り項目として、五高での生活(習学寮の運営、行事、生活)、五高の教育(授業、教師)、戦時の経験(学徒出陣、勤労動員、生活の統制)等を設定した。これにより判明した事実を含めた考察は以下のとおりである。習学寮は原則として1年生が入寮し、2年生数名が残寮して役員となり、3年生4名が惣代を務めるという人員構成で、教授が介入することはなく役員、惣代によって自治が行われていた。昭和18年4月に施行される「高等学校修練要綱」に対して、習学寮では新入生入学にあたり自主的に生活の改革を行っている。その一つに、それまで三々五々とっていた食事を一斉にし、食事前に寮生誓詞を唱えるという日課がある。大部分を占める1年生は、それ以前を知らないため、伝統として受け入れたようである。戦時政策により統制が強まっていくが、規則が厳しかった中学校と対比して高等学校は自由であったという証言は得られたが、自治の変化についての言及はほとんどなかった。数年在寮しないと変化を感じることはできず、対象の人数は僅かであるためである。比較するための事例を積み重ねることの重要性を認識した。高等学校への戦争の影響と対応を明らかにしていくことは、高等教育の特質を分析する上でも重要である。そのため、記録に残らない証言の収集は、対象者の高年齢化もあり喫緊の課題である。
