1.研究目的地形図読図は地理学研究や地理教育で絶えず実践されてきた地理的技能の一つである。しかしながら地形図読図は、その有用性が認識されているにもかかわらず方法論の体系化が遅れ、実践でも感覚的・経験的な習得を余儀なくされてきた。その結果、判読の個人差も大きい状況にあり、早急に効果的な読図法を構築することが必要とされる。そこで本研究では、効果的な読図法の構築・確立にむけた教材用地形図のあり方に焦点を当てて、全国の1:25,000地形図を対象として読図実践にふさわしい地形図を選定することを目的とした。2.研究方法まずいくつかの主題(地形や都市・村落、産業等の各種地理的事象)を設定し、それらが明快に示されたものかどうかを選定基準として、第1次の候補地形図をリストアップした。ここで得られた候補地形図から、つぎに各主題の判読上の難易度を比較検討して第2次の選定作業を試みた。こうして絞り込んだ図面の地域については、主題となる地理的事象のインテンシブな現地観察・調査を実施し、その知見をもとに第2次で選外となった図面の再検討も含めてさらなる選定作業(第3次)を行った。3.研究成果検討作業の結果、まず地理学的な主題として約30のテーマが設定された。それら各テーマについて、教材用地形図としては、代表となる主要図面が1図幅、同一主題の比較が可能となるサブ図面が2図幅、合計約90の図幅が選出できた。こうして選出された教材用地形図には、従前から地理学や地理教育での読図例集などで頻繁に使用されてきた図面以外にも、主題の判読が容易と思われる図面が多く含まれることが判明した。このことから教材用地形図に関しては、読図者の判読レベルに応じた様々な難易度の図面の選出が、今後不可欠であると指摘できる。
