项目摘要

本研究は、上代人に影響を与えた中国の仏教思想の時代的状況を考慮した上で、『万葉集』の歌人山上憶良の作品に見える仏教思想の特性を考察することを課題とする。具体的な作品として「悲嘆俗道仮即離易去難留詩一首井序」を取り上げた。特に文末の「慮存亡大期」について、従来の研究ではこの語の解釈が検討されてきたが、憶良が終末期を悟ることに執した意味の把握はなされていない。人生の終末期を悟ることへの関心は、仏教の影響以前の中国の処世観、生死観に基づくものと推測し、中国の経書等の考察を行った上で、中国古来の理想的な聖人のあり方と一致することが確かめられた。また中国の史伝、高僧伝、墓誌等を検討したところ、終末期を悟った最期の叙述が多く見え、中国ではそうした古来の聖人観と仏教の悟りとの融合が広まっていたことが窺える。東晋以後、鳩摩羅什、僧叡等によって思准されてきた悟りへの道程は憶良には遂に理解されず、憶良は中国的なあるべき境地の到達について苦悩したと言える。(以上の内容は更に考察を進めた上で「万葉学会大会」(2009年10月)にて口頭発表予定)また「日本挽歌」とそれに前置された漢詩文の検討によって、憶良が仏教の影響を受けつつも、仏教思想によっては救われ得ない感情をも自覚し表現していることを考察した。すなわち前置された漢詩文では、人生の有限性を悲嘆する中国の伝統的な表現がなされ、それと相俟って仏教的無常観が諦念を以て表されているのに対し、倭歌においては愛する者の死に際して尽きせぬ感情が古代的な土俗的信仰に基づく手法によって詠じられている。憶良は死の意味を仏の教えにより理解しようと努める一方で、理によっては律しきれない感情のあることを、漢倭の作品の形態の差異によって表現したことを考察した。(以上の論は「和歌文学研究」(第98号)に掲載〓〓)
