项目摘要

本研究では近世の盛岡藩において人々と動物との関係を考証することを目的とした。そのために「盛岡藩家老席日記雑書」および「弘前藩庁国日記」の原典を調査した。あわせて岩手県・青森県・秋田県の自治体史や先行研究の公刊論文を収集した。これらを比較・検討することによって、人々が野生鳥獣を利用するために捕獲する一方で、有害な鳥獣に対しては容赦ない殺戮がなされていたことが明らかとなった。とりわけ、牧で飼育される馬を喰い殺す狼に対する人々の敵愾心は強く、18世紀半ば以降は官民あげて狼の殱滅を企図していたことが窺われる。その結果として、人々に利用価値を認められず、人馬を害する動物は絶滅に至ったと考えられる。これらの近世史料には歴史用語として使われることが稀な表記も散見される。そこで、その意味や定義を分析するために、現行の猟師に対して民俗語彙の調査を行った。猟師への調査は、現在も熊狩りを続ける猟師が多く存在する山形県小国町を選んだ。これによって、盛岡藩や弘前藩の近世史料に使われた表記の一部が現在、山形県小国町の猟師に使用されていることを確認できた。また、現行の猟師は熊を獲り続けていながらも、その棲息数の維持を強く意識していることも垣間見える。猟師は熊に敬意を払い、熊は「山の神」からの授かりものとする信仰も保持している。こうした敬意や信仰が棲息数の維持に寄与していると考えられ、狼に対する人の意識との違いを浮き彫りにできる。本研究によって、人の意識の違いがその動物の棲息数に大きな影響を与えてきたという知見が得られた。この認識を踏まえた上で、高等学校の地理歴史科・公民科の授業実践において、人の意識の影響力を具体的に訴えていきたい。なお、本研究で明らかになった事項をもとに、「近世狩猟の影響力」(仮題)について「地方史研究』などの学会誌で発表するべく準備を進めている。
