本研究の目的は、中等教育段階の生徒に国際社会をめぐる問題への関心を持たせ、問題の分析や解決策を考える参加型のワークショップ教材を開発し、国際社会の一員としての自覚を想起させ、自然と社会に貢献する意識を芽生えさせることにある。研究を進める過程で、JICAパレスチナ担当者より日本のODAに関する資料等の提供をうけ、パレスチナ支援を行っているNGOへのインタビューを行い、実際にイスラエル・パレスチナ両地域へ渡航し、その風土・慣習・伝統・生活環境など様々な映像資料や音声資料などを撮影・採取することができた。こうした、収集した資料をもとに、分離壁や難民キャンプに描かれた絵を使用し、フォトランゲージ教材を作成するなどした。また全校生徒へ向けて、学校内でパレスチナ地域の写真展を開催し、普段あまり目にすることのない国際紛争の舞台への視覚的な理解を促すようにつとめた。自身が担当する学年では、パレスチナ問題に関する講演を行い、その中で参加型の手法を用いて開発教育を行った。本研究の意義は、中学生・高校生段階においてこそ国際問題に対する知識や行動の経験が必要であり、とくに普段は関心を持とうとしても、問題が複雑で、また日本から遠く関心が持ちにくい中東地域についてより身近に捉えさせることができた、という点である。こうした研究の重要性は、中等教育段階において社会に貢献できる人材の育成が要請されているという点にある。「持続可能な発展のための教育(以下、ESD)」の実践が初等・中等教育段階で推進されているが、ESDの目的は、地球や地域社会の課題に対して積極的に取り組むことのできる未来の担い手の育成にあるといえる。開発教育を通して、国際社会の課題を見出し自発的な取り組みに挑戦しようとする生徒を育てることは、グローバル社会を生き抜く力を身につけさせることにもなる。
