専用のソフトウェアを用いた動画変換作業は自由度が高い反面,多岐の変換オプションを有する上に,端末のプラットフォーム別に配信プロトコルを考慮せねばならず,不慣れな利用者にとっては敷居が高い.そこで,これらの作業を簡単かつ効率よく行えるよう,サーバサイドでオートメーション化するシステムが有用であると考えた.本研究は,主要なコンシューマ向け動画サービスと同等の機能を持ち合わせながら,単純な操作により,手軽で容易な動画配信を実現できるシステムの構築と,その有用性に対する検証を目的とする.本システムは,変換作業をWebブラウザで行なえるよう,Webアプリケーションとして実装することとし,サーバサイドのプログラム言語にPHPを用いた.ユーザの直観操作に応えるためこ,JavaScriptおよびHTML5の技術を駆使して汎用性を追求している.サーバ内部での変換処理にはHandBrakeのCLIツールを用い,これをPHPから実行させる.配信はマルチプロトコル対応のストリーミングサーバであるWowzaMediaServerを用い,変換された動画を端末プラットフォームに応じたプロトコルで配信できるように設計した.動画サービスを利用したことのない3人の被験者に,本システムを使用した場合と,デスクトップ型の変換ツールおよびFTPアップロードによる手作業の場合と,YouTubeを用いた場合の3つの手法で作業時間を計測したところ,平均でそれぞれ約18分,約34分,約19分であった.また,実機を用いてのストリーミング再生においては,品質の面で機種の差異が見られ,Android端末では無線LAN環境の依存が高いことが判った.このことから,本システムは,手作業による手法よりも短時間で,かつYouTubeとも遜色ない作業時間を達成でき,十分に実用性のあることが明らかとなった.
