本研究は、近世に生きた視覚障碍者である座頭・瞽女の存在形態を明らかにすることを目的とした研究である。中山太郎や加藤康昭、ジェラルド・グローマーによる基礎的研究を、讃岐国、特に高松藩をフィールドにして検証した。主な内容は次のとおりである。藩の通達によれば、配当施与の慣習が17世紀には成立していたと考えられ、巡業の拡大に従い村々が難儀したため、天保2年に廻在期間を縮小されるようになり扶持米が制度化された。郡村入目によれば、「合力米(銀)」・「廻在銀」と書き出されている。また、「泊り賄(扶持)」が見える。鵜足郡下法勲寺村では天保10年に117人の止宿が同14年には232人に増加した(他領からの入り込みも多い)。双方とも人数分支払うため不慮の支出であることが想像できる。そのため、弘化2年に一人一人前の扶持米制度が確立した。また吉凶による不時配当が給される場合には日帰りでの収集が許され、他領への廻在、止宿は禁止されることになった。扶持米は、阿野郡北では一人前1石7斗6升5合であったが、半人前支給の瞽女もいた。座頭・瞽女の配当支給は冠婚葬祭・新築など8項目、銭500文以下とされた。各郡、家で対応が異なっており、大内郡では、座頭・瞽女一人につき300軒前後の縄張りを設け、扶持米の給付は年4回とした。座頭・瞽女は受位されることで身分が保障される。座頭については、勾当の改苗を許可する浅江惣検校の書状を確認した。瞽女では弟子入りによる扶持米給付願い書があった。越後などのように地域的「座」組織があったことはうかがわれるものの、座頭・瞽女は一括して郡村の支配を受けていたことも明らかになった。村々難儀ゆえの扶持米制度創設は、座頭の階級上昇の見込みは失わせたものの、ある程度の生活が保障されることとなった。最後になるが、衛生上視覚障碍者が出ることが予測される世相のなかで、座頭・瞽女の制度は、視覚障碍者の生活を保障するだけでなく、村々を保護する意味でも重要であった。よって、郡村では状況に合わせて整備する必要があったと考えるのである。
