フォニックス指導について, 松村ほか(2011)が「英語科における効果的なフォニックス指導の在り方」について, 継続したフォニックス指導の効果を検証した。その結果, 基本的な文字と音のつながりに特化したフォニックス指導が文字と音のつながりの理解を深めることができることが明らかになった。しかし, 一方でフォニックス指導を継続しなければ, 英文内にある未習語に対して既習のフォニックスの知識を活用できない生徒も見受けられた。そこで本研究では, リーパー(2008)の「Rhymingとは, 単語の終わりの音(例 : king/sing/ring)に注目させた理論である。また, 終わりの音が韻を踏んでおり, リズムよく音読することが出来るものとなっている。アメリカでは, ヒスパニック系の移民の増加により, 幼児期における英語指導の改革が進められている。」という視点を導入して, 英文内に同じフォニックスの要素(例 Mike likes bikes very much.)を, 韻を踏む形にフォニックス学習材を作成することとした。研究方法は次の手順を踏んだ。授業のウォームアップ時にRhymingの要素を含むフォニックス学習材の音読練習をさせる。学習材については, 既習のフォニックスの知識を活用することとする。音読練習をさせながら, 音と文字のつながりを意識させるために, 共通の綴りと音になっているものを把握させて再度音読させる。その次の授業では, 前時の復習として前時に取り上げた英文の音読から行ったのち, 新しい文を導入する。最後に, ALTに協力を依頼して, 未習語を含む英文の音読テストを行うとともに, アンケートを実施する。アンケートでは, 該当語をどのように読んだのかをカタカナで記入させるだけでなく, なぜそう読んだのかについて記述させる。研究結果として, フォニックス学習材を用いると英文からフォニックスの要素を見つけ出そうと考えて音読することで, 単純に単語を提示する場合よりもフォニックスに関する知識が定着すること, 様々な文章を読むので学習意欲を高い状態に維持することができることが明らかとなった。一方で生徒の実態や発達段階に応じて, フォニックス学習材を活用することが重要であることも分かった。
