本研究では、高校生英語学習者の語彙サイズを算出し、語彙学習方略の使用実態を明らかにすることを試みた。以下の4点を研究目的とした。1. 語彙サイズテスト(1, 000語～4, 000語レベル)を実施し、学習者の平均語彙サイズを明らかにする。2. 語彙学習方略質問紙を実施し、学習者が使用する方略の変化を追跡して調査する。3. 高校3年間にわたり学習者を指導し、縦断的な研究を行うことで、指導の成果と課題を確認する。4. コミュニケーション能力に焦点を置く学習指導要領の基礎研究とし、指導のための知見を得る。研究方法としては、学習者に上記テストと質問紙をそれぞれ1回ずつ3年間にわたって実施し、実施ごとに全て回収することで調査結果に影響が出ないように配慮した。データは統計的分析を用い、分散分析と多重比較を行った。研究の結果より、学習者の使用する方略には偏りが見られ、一定の熟達度まで到達して使用や選択に幅や深みが出てくることが明らかとなった。方略の偏り関しては、教師やネイティブ・スピーカーを活用した社会的方略は、学年の進行とともに使われなくなったこと、また、他人と協調して単語学習を進める方略の使用率も低いまま推移したことが挙げられた。一方で、方略の幅や深みに関しては、方略使用は学年が進行するにつれて認知処理の浅いものから深いものへと多様化することが示された。特にイメージ化やキーワード法を含む精緻化方略は、高校3年間をかけて有意な使用率の上昇が見られた。さらに、語彙を計画的に学習したり、定期的に復習したりするメタ認知方略に関しても、3年次に差異が現れるという結果が得られた。このことから、英語教師が意識的に学習者に対して精緻化方略やメタ認知方略に関わる指導を早い段階から行っていくことが語彙力向上に有効であることが示唆された。今後の課題として、方略指導を実際に行い、その意義について検証していく必要があると考えられる。
