ボツナワ共和国のカラハリ砂漠,カデ地区に生活するグイおよびガナの人々は,自然に依存する狩猟採集を生業として広い遊動域をもって活動してきた。彼らは,この砂漠環境を彼ら自身の民俗分類体系によって熟知しているものと考えられる。そこで,カラハリ採集狩猟民の空間利用と認知に関して,地名を手がかりにデータベース構築と分析を行うことを目的とした。今年度の研究では,現地調査において収集した,自然地名・地名・集落位置等をもとに自然環境および地名に関するデータ集積および,データベース構築を行い,地図化を行った。まず,地名に関するデータ整理を行い,データベースの作成を行った。実際に観察でき画像記録がある地点については,画像データも付加できるよう整理を行った。上記の地名データをもとに,グイ・ガナの活動域における地名の特徴と,地名からみた空間利用の方法と特色について検討を加えた。その結果,砂丘の起伏,窪地(パン),水の貯まる窪地のような地形景観,森,木の茂みなどの植生景観,立ち木などの自然物,および,その場所にまつわる人々のエピソード,に基づいて地点が認識され,地名が付けられていることが明らかとなった。空間における彼らの行動の特色は,彼らの長距離旅行の場合に特徴的にみられ,地点を目視することによってとらえ,直線的に目指して歩くという行動と地点との関係も明らかになった。その結果,彼らがしばしば行っていた長距離の移動に際しては,目視できる範囲内に目標となる地点をみいだし,地名が付され,それをたどって目的地へ向かうという方法によってルート構築されている可能性が見いだされた。
