项目摘要

本研究では、江戸時代の養生法と現代の健康法を比較し、それぞれの身体観の違いと道徳規範を明らかにした。養生法と健康法の違いは身体観念にある。外部の自然現象に相関して疾病が生起する身の観念は、江戸時代の漢方思想を背景としたものであり、養生思想の形而上学的自然哲学を反映している。一方、立体的、組織的な内部構造を持つ身体観念は、近代西洋医学の機械論的自然観を反映する。これらの事実は、歴史に依存して形を変える身体の歴史的可塑性を意味している。江戸時代の養生思想は、朱子学的天人合一思想を背景としたリゴリズムであったが、現代の健康概念は、怠惰や自暴自棄を戒める規律訓練を重視する。前者はおもに支配階級を対象としていたのに対し、後者は下層市民を積極的に対象として取り込もうとする。したがって、健康思想が養生思想に比べて進歩的・文明的であると考えるべきではなく、いずれも時代の社会規範を象徴している概念であると考えるべきである。
