思春期・青年期自閉性障害児者の余暇活動の実態について調査と余暇活動の支援を行った。調査からは,余暇活動を含めた自閉性障害児者と家族が抱える問題が明らかとなった一方で,余暇活動が彼らの自己実現や社会性の改善に寄与したと思われる事例も明らかとなった。余暇活動の中での集団のリーダーの経験等を通し自尊心や周りへの配慮・優しさを獲得した者や子どもの頃に接していたボランティアと文通を行うことで他者とコミュニケーションすることの楽しさに目覚めた者がいた。余暇活動という自由な時間・空間の中で,自閉的なやり方ではありつつも自発的でプレイフルな他者とのかかわりを楽しめる者が数多く存在した。また,高機能の者の中には,活動の最中に他者を気づかったり,援助したりする行動を示した者も見られた。活動内容の急な変更に対しても前の予定にこだわったり,パニックを起こす行動はほとんど見られなかった。こだわった者に対しては,本人の話を聞き,次の機会にどうしたらよいかを提案させることで,それ以上こだわることはなかった。余暇活動の企画を担当した者は,意欲的に取り組んでおり,個人の興味や趣味に基づき他のメンバーの要望を加味したものを提案していた。1年間の活動の反省では,知的機能の程度にかかわらず,本人なりの表現で,それぞれの余暇活動の中でよかった点や次への要望を述べることができていた。高機能の者の中には,他のメンバーの意見に対しコメントや提案をする者もいた。それらのコメントや提案は,本人の興味などに基づくものが多かったが,他のメンバーに対する配慮の感じられるものも含まれていた。また,余暇活動に参加した者の中から希望者に活動の様子を写真記録と報告文の執筆をしてもらった。それらは,会報として編集し,会員に郵送した。また,インターネットのwebページにも掲載した。写真や文章は自閉性障害者らしい視点からのものであったが,参加者の内面に触れた記述も見られた。今回の余暇活動の実践から,自閉性障害児者の余暇活動は,単に本人なりの自由時間の過ごし方を教えるだけでなく,自由に楽しめる時間の中で本人なりの他者や社会へのかかわる楽しさとその方法を教えることもできる可能性が示唆された。
