本研究は、昨年度からの継続研究である.昨年度、大学のマス化段階における大字生の読書行動の変容を捉える目的で、東京工業大字と京都大学の両理学部の卒業生(1969年〜1988年卒)に対しアンケート調査を実施シた。このデータの解析ならびに、研究代表者がかつて実施にかかわった京都大字の経済学部・教育学部の卒業生調査(1969年〜1988年卒対象)のデータとの比較が今年度の課題だった.これら四学部(東京工業大学理学部/京都大学理学部・経済学部・教育学部)の卒業生の読書行動を比較した場合に確認できたことは、以下の通りである.東京工業大学理学部と京都大学理学部の場合、読書行動は文化サークル活動や一般教養科目への取組みの熱心さと親近性がある。これに対し京都大学経済学部の場合、読書行動は学外活動(交友やアルバイト)との親近性が強い。また京都大学教育学部の場合は、読書行動と専門科目の取組みとの親近性が強い。要するに、本を読むという同じ行動でありながら、大学の風土が異なれば、その意味が大きく異なる点が実証的に確認できたわけだ。今回の調査対象者が大学時代を過ごした年代は、「大学生」という共通のアイデンティティ基盤が揺るぎ、大学生の「分衆化」が起こり始めた時代的分岐点に相当する。本調査は、読書行動という、学生生活全体から見ればかなり限られた部分にスポットをあてたものであるが、こうした調査領域の絞り込みゆえにかえって、この時代の大学生の変容過程を鮮明に描写することができた。そのほか本研究では、大学生の読書行動におけるレファレンス・グループの意味、大学生の「大衆化」にともなう「教養主義」カルチャーの局所化等について、実証的見地から有意義なファインデインダスが得られた.
