北海道の然別湖畔で実施された3泊4日のキャンプに参加した5・6年生児童72名(男36名、女36名)を対象として感性および共感性、特性共感性、心理的距離を変数として調査を行った。キャンプのおもなプログラムは、火起こし体験、カヌー、自然観察、ハイキング、ファイナルパーティなどであり、自然の中での直接体験を意図して実施されたものである。調査は、キャンプ前に感性、共感性、特性共感性について行い、キャンプ後に感性、共感性、心理的距離について実施した。まず感性および共感性であるが、キャンプ前と比較してキャンプ後で高まっており、男女とも共通の傾向であった。このことから、キャンプ体験によって感性および共感性は高まることが分かった。両変数について男女差を比較したところ、キャンプ前およびキャンプ後ともに女子が男子より高い得点を示し性差が認められた。特性共感性と感性との関連については、特性共感性の高群および低群を比較したところ、ともに感性得点の向上が見られたが、高群においてより顕著であった。心理的距離は、キャンプ中の班のメンバーおよび担当カウンセラーに対する心理的な距離を測るもので人間関係のひとつの目安になるものであるが、心理的距離が近い群では感性の向上が見られたのに対して、遠い群では向上が見られなかった。また、心理的距離と特性共感性との関連を検討したところ、特性共感性の高群の方が低群よりもキャンプ中の班構成メンバーに対して心理的距離を近く認知していた。以上の結果から、自然体験活動が参加児童に対して感性及び共感性の向上を促す働きがあることが確認できたが、その向上度合いについては特性共感性および心理的距離が関連しており、指導に当たっては活動中における班内での相互の心理的な距離を近づけるような配慮をすることが重要であり、それによって感性や特性共感性がより高まる可能性が示唆された。
