本研究は,子どもの社会認識の発達的変化を明らかにするために行った。研究にあたっては,児童期から青年期にかけての子どもの社会認識構造の発達的変化を中心に検討した。小学生から大学生までの649名の調査対象者に,異なる営業形態の小売店を示し(例えばスーパーマーケットとコンビニエンスストア),その違いを質問紙に回答させた。回答内容を小売業経営の8つの要素を分岐視点として整理し,小売業と消費者の関係についての子どもの認識の実態を検討した。結果の主な点を要約すれば次のとおりである。1.子どもの社会認識の発達は,量的増加と共にいくつかの質的に異なった発達段階に区切られる。2.小学校4.5年生頃を過渡期として,具体的思考(concrete thinking)の段階から抽象的思考(abstract thinking)の段階へと移行する。3.児童期から青年期にかけて拡散的思考(divergent thinking)と収束的思考(convergent thinking)が繰り返される。4.子どもの社会認識構造(社会のわかり方)は並列型(Independent cognition),関連型(referential congnition),組み込み型(Incorporated cognition),変革型(reformative cognition),総合型(comprehensive cognition)の5つに類型化される。5.子どもの知識成長の過程として,社会的事物・事象に関する知識を量的に増加させる段階から知識相互のネットワーク化を図る段階,あるまとまりとして知識を統合する段階へと移行し,さらにこれらの段階の螺旋的な繰り返しが想定される。ここで明らかになった子どもの社会認識の発達に即した社会科授業改善の在り方を検討することが今後の課題である。
