今年度は、まず発掘調査報告書に基き、古墳から出土した鉄製武器を集成する作業を進めた。特に、近畿地方、北部九州地方、関東地方の資料を重点的に集成した。また、パーソナルコンピューターを使用して集成した資料を整理する作業を並行して行った。さらに、報告書に実測図が掲載されていない資料や未報告の資料については、資料を保管する機関に実際に赴いて実測図の作成および写真撮影を行った。それらの作業の結果、畿内地域とその周辺地域においては鉄製武器の変遷をほぼ明らかにすることができた。また、武器を出土する古墳の分布や規模の変化から、近畿地方における軍事組織の形成過程を復元した。また、畿内以外の地域においても、武器のおおまかな形態や組み合わせの変化に畿内との共通性が認められるものの、古墳時代前期における武器の出土量や、中期における武器出土古墳の規模や分布といった点で相違点が見いだせた。そのような相違点は、それぞれの地域における軍事組織の形成過程が異なっていたことを示唆するものである。今後はさらに、ケーススタディを相互に比較する作業を進め、地域ごとの相違点が生まれる背景や全国的な軍事組織形成の画期にまで踏み込んだ考察を行う必要がある。また、いずれの地域においても、古墳時代中期の段階では武器の地域性を示すような資料は確認できなかった。古墳時代中期の段階では、特定地域で生産された武器が各地に流通していたと推測できる。一方、古墳時代後期以降は武器に地域性が認められ、武器の在地生産が開始されると思われる。そのような結果も、古墳時代における武器の生産体制や流通という側面から、当時の軍事組織のあり方を考察する手がかりとなる重要な成果であった。
