项目摘要

研究の最終年度である今年度は、古墳時代前期の刀剣を中心に資料調査を行った。また、弥生時代の鉄刀と素環刀に関する検討結果を論文にまとめつつ、研究成果報告書を作成した。当初の予測通り、装具の材質や構造によって刀剣の分類と編年を再構築し、地域性を明らかにすることができた。刀剣の把は、弥生時代後期の初頭、弥生時代終末期の初頭、古墳時代前期の初頭にそれぞれ大きな変革を遂げる。この変化は、単に道具の形態変化に留まるものではない。後期初頭には西日本と東日本の地域性が明瞭になり、終末期には瀬戸内海沿岸地域と山陰、北陸、東海以東の違いが明瞭になる。さらに、古墳時代前期初頭には刀装具に中国起源の技術が導入されるなど、把の変化の背後には地域間の政治的関係や対外交渉が反映されていると考えられるのである。また、素環刀の分析を加えることによって、より厳密に地域性の範囲を確定できた。さらに、地域性が払拭されていく過程に、弥生時代から古墳時代への変化を見いだした。ただし、本研究では論じきれなかった課題も多い。3年間という短い期間では、古墳時代中期以降の刀剣、朝鮮半島・中国の刀剣、刀剣以外の鉄製武器について十分な資料調査を進めることができなかった。今後は、それらの遺物に関する個別研究を進めるとともに、これまで取り組んできた古墳時代中期の軍事組織研究や、後期古墳出土武器の生産・流通に関する研究と整合化を図ることを目標としたい。
