研究２年目の今年度は、福岡県、兵庫県、静岡県、東京都、群馬県、栃木県などで円頭大刀の資料調査を行った。金銅装円頭大刀と鉄地銀象嵌円頭大刀の実測と写真撮影を行い、円頭大刀の分類と編年に関する新たな見通しを得た。金銅装円頭大刀は大きく４型式に分けられ、４段階程度に編年できると考えられる。また、鉄地銀象嵌円頭大刀も同程度に分類、編年できると思われるが、こちらは未解決の課題である。いっぽう、本研究の主要な課題であった圭頭大刀については、すべての資料調査を終え、研究成果を査読論文に取りまとめた（豊島直博2023「圭頭大刀の生産と流通」『考古学雑誌』第105巻第２号）。この論文では、圭頭大刀の分類、編年、系譜、生産主体を論じ、圭頭大刀が６世紀第Ⅳ四半期に現れ、７世紀第Ⅱ四半期まで存続すること、朝鮮半島南部（百済）に系譜をもつこと、朝鮮半島南部―北部九州―山陰―畿内―東海―関東―東北地方南部がおもな流通経路であること、法隆寺に伝世する七星剣との共通点から、上宮王家が生産主体であることなどを論じた。また、これまでの研究成果を総合した著作として、豊島直博2022『古代刀剣と国家形成』同成社を出版した。本書では、縄文時代における剣形武器の出現から、弥生時代における鉄製武器の出現と地域性、古墳時代前期における威信財としての鉄製武器の流通、古墳時代中期の鉄製武器と軍事組織、装飾付大刀の出現、装飾付大刀の生産と氏族との関連、鉄製武器と国家形成の関連などを詳しく論じた。
