项目摘要

本研究は、弥生時代と古墳時代の日本、中国、韓国の鉄製武器を比較し、当時の国際関係を解明することを目的としている。今年度は学術雑誌や発掘調査報告書をもとに中国と韓国の鉄製武器を集成した。また、すでに集成を終えている日本の鉄製武器に関しては、愛媛県高橋仏師1号墳の鉄剣、岡山県穴ケ迫古墳の円頭大刀、兵庫県東山古墳群の鉄製武器など西日本各地の古墳出土武器について実測・写真撮影等の資料調査を行った。これまでの検討により、弥生時代～古墳時代前期の日本・中国・韓国の鉄製武器には鉄本体の形態に多くの共通点が認められることが判明した。いっぽう、刀剣の木製装具など全体像には構造や外形の相違が顕著に認められた。この事実は、日本で出土する鉄製武器の多くが中国や韓国で生産され、日本に流入したことを示唆する。また、刀剣装具の相違は装具のみが各国で独自に製作、装着されたことを窺わせる。日本の古墳から出土する鉄製武器に、鉄本体の個性が明瞭に認められるようになるのは古墳時代中期(5世紀)以降である。この段階をもって、大半の鉄製武器が日本で作られるようになったと推測する。従来の初期国家論では、鉄の流通の掌握と前方後円墳の出現が連動するか否か意見の対立する状況が続いていた。本研究では、3世紀後半に舶載鉄製品の流通が掌握されて古墳時代が始まり、4世紀末に鉄資源の流通が掌握されて初期国家が完成するという見通しを得た。これらの研究成果は単著『鉄製武器の流通と初期国家形成』にまとめた。
