前年度に引き続き、後期上方読本の作品につき、資料収集作業を行いつつ、研究の総括を行い、日本近世文学会秋季大会(2000.10)において口頭発表し、その内容を増補して論文化した(本報告書11参照)。そこで得られた結論は概ね下記の如くである。後期上方読本の諸作家は、後期江戸読本(山東京伝・曲亭馬琴の作)を強く意識し追随しようと試みた。そこから従来の評価では、京伝・馬琴の模倣、亜流とされてきた。しかし主要作家である栗杖亭鬼卵・好華堂野亭等の作品を調査研究した結果、大枠の方法においては江戸読本を踏襲しながら、上方独自の作風を示し得ていることが明らかになった。上記発表・論文では、鬼卵の『今昔庚申譚』、『茶店墨江草紙』等に即して、京伝・馬琴に見られた、宿業等の人力を超えたものの支配する構図を後退させ、代わって人間当然の情を辿ることで長編小説としての構成の合理性を保っていること、同作者の『絵本更科草紙』に即して、善悪対立構図に基づく勧善懲悪の貫徹が崩れていること、野亭の『部領使世継草紙』等において、既定の道徳規範から逸脱しようとも当然なる一念を貫く生き方を肯定する態度が認められることを指摘し、江戸読本と異なる上方読本の独自性について論じた。なお前年に続き、後期上方読本に属する手塚兎月の『夢裡往事』の後半を翻刻し、当作品の特色等についての論考を付した(本報告書11参照)。
