近世前期に起こった鳥取藩士宅間八太夫に関わる事件が、その後語られ且つ記述されていく中で、実説から変容していったことを、資料に即して跡付けた。宅間八太夫事件とは―寛文11年（1671）7月29日、江戸在勤中の宅間の若党が旗本の野々山瀬兵衛に切り捨てられ、宅間はその子細を尋ねようとしたが、野々山は逃走し、宅間はそれを追跡した。相手が旗本であったことから、鳥取藩と幕府側との間に緊迫が生じたが、結局、野々山は不適切な対応を咎められて自害し、宅間はお構い無しとなった―というものである。この事件のみで一作をなす実録の書は今のところ見出せない。ただし鳥取藩関係者は、後年に至るまでこの事件について語り、更には文章化していった。この中で、実説にとどまらず話を増補するなどの変容が生じており、実録が生成し展開するのと同様の様相が認められる。このことから、これを一種の「実録化」であるとして論じた。実説については、藩の公務記録『御用人日記』に見ることができる。やがて事件は国元鳥取へ伝わり、伝聞が増補されていく。宅間は鑓を抜いて野々山を追った、傍輩の石河四方左衛門が事件の報を聞くや宅間の庇護に向かった、宅間の信仰していた観世音がこの時擁護したなどのことが加わる。なお約80年後の1750年頃、同藩の上野忠親は、事件を直接伝え聞いた人に取材し、それを記録しようとしていたことも判明した。1800年代に入ると、事件当時の藩主池田光仲が宅間の行動を評価した逸話などが増補される。更にこれが鳥取藩の外に伝わり、諸国の事件を対象とする武家説話集（『武説禁顕録』『諸家深秘録』など）の中に収録されると、宅間・野々山それぞれに対する褒貶をより明示する方向に沿って話が改変されていく。これと対比するに、鳥取藩関係者は、あくまでも実説を根底に置き、それと連続を保ち得る中において増補改変を行っていたということが見て取れる。
