故橋本萬太郎教授が言語の発展の類型として仮定した「牧畜民型」「農耕民型」のモデルが,チベット諸語の声調の類型特徴の形成を概念化するのにもはたして有効か否かを検証すべく,四川盆地と青藏高原が境を接する褶曲山脈地帯の〈川西民族走廊〉で話されているチベット語方言およびチベット系の諸語について,調査報告を中心に幅広く記述資料を収集し,自身のフィールド調査による資料を加えて各言語の音調システムについて分析を行なった。これまで公表されている調査報告ではいずれも単音節語の音調を基準として複合語の音調についてはその組合せを声調交替として記述しており,音調による意味弁別の機能のない言語は「声調のない言語」として扱い,音調にかんする記述データを欠く場合が多い。いっぽう「声調言語」として記述されている言語であっても音節に固定した調値をとるのではなく,2音節語の音調パターンを基本とするピッチアクセントとして分析するほうが適切である場合が少なくないことが明らかになった。研究代表者がこれまでに現地調査により収集したチベット語アムド方言やムニャ語,ゲシザ語の資料についてアクセント体系の再分析と類型分類を中心とした実証作業を進めてきた結果,「声調言語」「非声調言語」の枠を越えて2音節語の後ろの音節にアクセントがある音調パターンが広く見られ,その類型に関しては「牧畜民型」「農耕民型」という単純なモデル化ができないことが判明しつつある。本研究の締めくくりとしてチベット言語学の専門家である胡坦教授(中国チベット学研究センター)を招聘し,国内の専門家の参加を得てチベット語の声調の発生と類型構造の発展についての共同討議を行なった。
