本研究は実時間内での文理解過程を理論的・実証的に考察し,とりわけ心的操作としての文処理の在り方並びに心内表示構造を明らかにすることを通して,広く人間の情報処理に示唆を与えることを意図したものである.本年度は,まず以下の様な日本語(非)ガーデンパス文を材料として,文節ごとのself-paced reading法により,日本語文処理の直・並列性を実験的に考察した.(1)太郎が入学試験を受けたとき神社へ行ってお守りを買ってあげた.(2)太郎が入学試験を受けたとき神社へ行ってお守りを買ってくれた.(1)については解釈に意識的な困難が伴わないが,(2)は「くれた」位置で先行する解釈が改訂されなければならないガーデンパス文である.本実験ではreading timeを基に各文節の処理に費やされる処理資源の大小を評価し,「あげた/くれた」位置で(2)について(1)よりも大きな負荷が生じることを確認し,さらに「神社へ行って」の副詞的要素が(2)においては再解釈を助け,(1)においては解釈に負荷を加えることを見いだした.この結果の解釈として,文理解に一時的な曖昧性が生じた場合,最優先される解釈の表示と二次的な解釈の表示との比較において両者の負荷の差が大きくない場合,複数の解釈が同時に保持される可能性を指摘した.この事は,人間の文理解が解釈を一義的に決定しつつ進む直列処理ではなく,処理資源の制限を受けた,ある程度の「優先順位つき並列処理(ranked parallel processing)」である可能性を示唆するものである.本実験結果については日本認知科学会第17回大会において口頭発表した.また,文理解における再解釈に焦点を当てた論文集,Reanalysis in Sentence Processing,(1998).(eds.)by Fodor,J.D.＆ F.Ferreira,Kluwer.の理論的・経験的問題を検討した書評論文"Failure Reveals Mind:Breakdown in Sentence Comprehension"を執筆し,改稿の結果,日本英語学会学会誌English Linguisticsに掲載されることが決まった.
