治療を受けたがん患者のコントロール感覚を明らかにするために、癌の診断で治療を受けた患者18名に対して個別に半構成的質問紙に基づく面接法でデータ収集を行った。データの逐語録を作成し、がん患者のコントロール感覚に関係する内容を抽出して分析を行った。対象となった患者は、男性13名と女性5名の合計18名で、年齢は45歳から81歳であった。全ての対象者が、癌という病名について主治医から説明を受けていた。治療を受けたがん患者のコントロール感覚は、「危ぶむ:治療効果や予後を心配すること」で、失われそうになるが、「見える:周囲の人との絆や回復の兆しあるいは自分らしさを見出せること」によって活力を得、さらに「感じる:治療の効果や安寧を実感できること」で取り戻されていくと考えられた。「見える」ための方略としては、〈支えを求める〉〈距離をおく〉〈情報を集める〉〈比較する〉〈従う〉〈解釈する〉〈対応方法を探す〉〈困難に立ち向かう〉〈いつも通りにする〉などがあった。これらの方略を用いながら、がん患者は自らの「危ぶみ」と闘いながら、治療の効果や安寧の「感じ」を取り戻すために、見えないことを「見える」ようにと奮闘していた。この研究から、がん患者のコントロール感覚を支えるためには、まず患者自身がどんなことを危ぶんでいるのかその体験を知ることが必要である。そして、患者自身がおかれている状況の肯定的な側面に目がいくように、患者自身が用いている方略を尊重しながら、患者が今体験している苦痛を除去し、環境を整え、適切な情報を提供することが求められるだろう。
