平成12年度の研究から、人々がおこなう外集団一体視(複数の成員からなる集団を1つの主体のように捉えること)や外集団同質視(外集団成員同士の類似性を認知すること)が、その後の集団行動に多大な影響を及ぼすことが示唆された。これをうけて平成13年度は、当初の計画を変更し、「周囲の人から同質視されること」に伴う主観的相互依存構造の効果を検討する調査研究を行った。従来の集団過程研究では、集団所属性の認知は「私は○○集団の一員である」というように自己同一性を構成することによって、集団行動を左右する、とされてきた。しかし集団所属性にはそれだけではなく、「他者は私を○○集団の一員と見なしている」という認識をも伴っている。この周囲から○○集団の成員と見なされ、他成員と同質視や一体視される場合、集団成員間には共通運命(他者から同じように扱われる関係)型の相互依存構造が期待されることになる。このように考えれば、いわゆる社会的アイデンティティの基盤には、集団内共通運命という主観的相互依存構造があるという見解が導出されるだろう。この見解の妥当性を検証するためには、集団所属性を構成している「私は○○集団の一員である(自覚的集団所属意識)」と「他者は私を○○集団の一員と見なしている(鏡映的集団所属意識)」を分離し、それぞれが社会的アイデンティティ現象に与える影響を検討する必要がある。このために本研究では、調査対象者に「内集団成員がおこなった誇らしい振る舞いについて第三者に知られた」という場面を想定させ、どれくらい誇らしく感じるかを測定した。その際、その第三者の集団所属性を操作することで、鏡映的集団所属意識を変化させた。その結果、内集団成員の振る舞いへの誇らしさといった社会的アイデンティティ現象は、鏡映的集団所属意識によって強く左右されることが検証された。
