研究1では、児童虐待と老人虐待の認知の違いを明らかにすることを目的として、女子短大生82名を対象に調査を行った。その結果、児童虐待に比べて老人虐待の認知度は著しく低く、身体的虐待については双方ともに虐待と認識しているが、心理的虐待に関しては老人では児童に比べて虐待と認知する者は10〜20%低い値にとどまった。また、老人に対する経済的な搾取や意見表明権の剥奪は虐待とは認識されにくかった。虐待理由は、児童虐待の場合は両親の生い立ちや性格に原因が求められやすいのに比べて、老人虐待の場合はストレスや支えの不足、老人自身の問題に原意が求められがちであった。虐待対策は、児童虐待の場合は親への心理的な援助が中心であるのに対して、老人虐待の場合はより社会的な援助を必要とすると認識しているなどの結果が得られた。ほかに、世代間の差異などを検討するために、成人男女300名に対しても調査が実施されており、現在、その結果を集計中である。研究2では、老人専門の施設職員を対象として、老人虐待の促進要因について介護負担感を中心として検討することを目的とした。そこで、ザリットによる家庭介護者を対象とした介護負担感のスケールを、施設の介護職員向けに項目を修正した。その結果、施設の介護職員が負担ありと認識する老人と接することによって生じる介護負担感には、「多忙感や余裕のなさ」の因子と、「心理的な不安定感」の2つの因子があることが分かった。それらの項目と実際の虐待行動には至らないものの、虐待したいと感じてしまう心理、身体、介護放棄などの「虐待感情」項目との相関をみたところ、「多忙感や余裕のなさ」との関連は老人への不快感や心理的虐待感情と0.3〜0.4程度の関連が認められた。また、「心理的な不安定感」との関連は、身体的虐待感情、介護放棄を含めてすべての「虐待感情」項目と0.55〜0.63の相関が認められた。このことから、「心理的な不安定感」を感じるかどうかが、虐待感情を引き起こす要因となっていることが見いだされた。
