本研究の目的は、介護施設の介護職員および入居者（要介護高齢者）を対象とした前向きコホート研究を通して、要介護高齢者の口腔内環境や口腔ケアが、介護職員の介護の関する負担感（介護負担感）に与える影響を明らかにすることである。得られた結果から、介護職員の口腔ケアの介護負担感の軽減のための、歯科からのアプローチ方法を提示することを目標としている。 本研究のデザインは前向きコホート研究であり、初年度は介護施設のリクルートや、研究体制の準備・確立を行ってきた。それに引き続き2年目である平成29年度は、研究体制の整った5施設の特別養護老人ホームを対象に、実際にベースライン調査を実施した。研究参加に同意が得られ、研究対象となったのは、介護職員が約400名、要介護高齢者が約450名であった。これらを対象にベースライン調査として、介護職員には口腔内診査およびアンケート調査を、要介護高齢者には口腔内診査およびカルテ・フェイスシート調査を行った。3年目である本年度（平成30年度）は、ベースライン調査の結果から得られた知見をもとに学会発表を行ってきた。その発表内容は、介護職員側の調査内容からは、介護職員の口腔ケアの実施の状況や口腔ケアに対する意識および介護負担感の実態についてである。また要介護高齢者側の調査内容からは、要介護高齢者の入院日数という新規の観点を加えた誤嚥性肺炎発症およびその入院日数の実態についてである。
