本研究は、ワーキング・メモリ(WM)が第2言語(英語)での読解プロセス、特に文章構成に関する予測(text structure prediction)にどのように関わっているかを調べたものである。この研究を通して、「リーディング転移」の問題、っまり第1言語で習得されたリーディング・スキルが第2言語(英語)リーディングヘ転移する際に、どのような制約が働いているのか、という問題の解明を意図し、英語リーディング指導のより強固な理論的基盤を構築することを目指している。平成13年度は、前年度の詳細な文献研究に基づき、「第2言語リーディングにおける文章構成予測は第2言語ワーキング・メモリ(L2WM)容量の制約を受け、L2WM容量は第2言語処理効率(文字認識、語彙意味検索、統語解析、命題内容抽出などがどれくらい効率的に行えるか)により決定される」という仮説を検証するための実験を行なった。実験結果として次のことが観察された。(1)文章構成予測は、L2WMとの間に有意な関係を有している。対照的に、第1言語(日本語)ワーキング・メモリとの間にはそうした関係は存在しない。(2)文章構成予測は、第2言語語彙意味判断テスト及び第2言語命題認定テストと有意な関係を持っている。他の、数字認識、文字認識、文法性判断などのテストとの間にはそうした関係は見られない。(3)L2WM容量が第2言語処理効率によって説明される比率は、(有意なものの)20%程度に過ぎず、L2WM容量が第2言語処理効率のみによって決定されるとは言い難い。これらの結果は、「リーディング転移」の問題に関しては、第1言語リーディングで習得された知識・スキルの第2言語リーディングヘの転移において、第2言語ワーキング・メモリが制約として働いていることを示している。ワーキング・メモリ容量の決定要因については、情報処理効率以外の要因も関与していることを意味しており、この点を解明するためのさらなる研究が望まれる。

The result is that the first language is not the same as the second language. The key factors for determining the capacity of the information processing system are the information processing efficiency and the significance of the information processing system.
