Turbulent secondary motions over walls with spanwise inhomogeneity

If turbulent flow is exposed to a wall with inhomogeneous boundary conditions in the spanwise direction, large scale vortical structures may develop. These structures influence the heat and mass transfer near the wall and are therefore of great importance for a variety of different natural and technological flows. Within this project the development of those secondary motions and the related influence on the transport of a passive scalar is investigated based on numerical experiments with varying boundary conditions. Based on the gained knowledge it will become possible to develop improved predictive models for the appearance of secondary motions and to generate ideas for the targeted manipulation of fluid flows.
