リプシツ連続でない係数を持つ2階線型波動方程式にたいする初期値問題の解の存在定理を用いて、キルヒホフ方程式の解の時間延長定理を一般的な形で、すなわち、変係数退化キルヒホフ方程式に対して、証明することに成功した。また、発展方程式、たとえば、熱方程式、波動方程式およびシュレヂンガー方程式、さらにボルツマン方程式に対する初期値問題の時間減衰を導き、それを用いて時間大域解の存在を示した。さらに線型対称双曲型方程式系の散乱理論の手法を用いて、波動作用素のL1およびLYinfyの評価を導き、変係数対称双曲型方程式系に対する初期値問題の時間大域解の存在を示し、さらに非線型散乱作用素の存在を証明した。その際、波動作用素は擬微分作用素として表現でき、そのシンボルが高々多項式のオダーでしか増大しないことを証明するのが、ポイントであった。発展方程式に対する初期値問題の解の減衰は主部が定係数の非線型発展方程式の大域解に対して多項式オーダーの減衰については国内外においてよく研究されているが、主部が変数係数の場合に非線型発展方程式の大域解に対して多項式オーダーの減衰を導いたのは、本研究が最初である。梶谷は2003年6月イタリアのトリノおよびドイツのフライベルグの国際研究集会において、Global solutions of nonlinear symmetrie hyperbolic systemsという題で研究発表を行った。
