今年度の本研究の主題は、メスメリズム(催眠術)が19世紀以降のフランスの社会や文化、特にフランス文学にどのような影響を与えたのかを主眼において行われた。そのさいに、19世紀後半の文学と人文社会学に焦点を絞って、三つの側面から、メスメリズム(催眠術)の意義を明らかにしたいと思った。1、メスメリズムは、医学的治療法として、民間療法としては一定の成果を挙げていたが、その立場からして、当時の入々にとっては、画期的であるとともに、いささか祭儀的な治療法と思われていた。しかし、19世紀後半のシャルコーの出現により、ヒステリー研究にこの方法が用いられることによって、再認識されるとともに、次代の精神医学、特にフロイトの精神分析を生み出す契機となり、それが20世紀文学・思想に与えた影響は、ここで細かく論じるまでもない。2、その19世紀を見据えて、催眠術が20世紀に与えた影響をフロイトの存在を考慮に入れつつ、あえて、当時の文学との関連性を見てみるなら、モーパッサンいう特異な存在を見過ごすことができない。3、モーパッサンは、フロイトと同時代の人物であり、前述のシャルコーの講義にも臨席している。その執筆活動は多岐にわたるが、ことに晩年の作品主題、すなわち狂気に集中しているという点では、精神医学的かつ、フロイト的な精神分析にも、密接な関連性を有している。本研究は、そうした文学と精神医学、そして社会現象学的な視点から、もう一度、フランス文学を再検討する試みを行ったという点で評価されるべきものと思われる。
