本研究は,地域通貨の発生・流通・維持に関する以下の2つの課題からなる.第1の課題は,地域通貨の成立と維持のための必要条件を明らかにする数理的モデルの構築である.第2の課題は,地域通貨が地域経済システムに対してもちうる機能とメカニズムを理論的に整理し,その特性を明らかにすることである.この目的を達成するために,まず,地域通貨の実態を調査・整理し,次に,本研究で構築する数理モデルと関連の深い確率的ネットワーク成長モデルに関する研究の包括的レビューとそれに基づいた考察を行なった.その結果,Internet上でのfile size分布やweb pageの規模分布が冪分布/対数正規分布に従うことを説明する最近のネットワーク成長モデルの多くは,数理的に本質的な部分では,Simon modelと(ほぼ)同じ構造といえることが判った.また,冪分布と対数正規分布の各々を生成するモデルは,独立したものではなく,両者にはある関係があることや,観測時刻のランダムネスから冪乗則を説明するモデルがreal option/optimal stopping問題と関連した構造を持つことを明らかにした.これらの考察の後,地域通貨を介した財の交換過程に関する経済主体の意思決定問題(本研究で構築する確率動学モデルの状態推移確率を決定するサブ・モデル)をオプション・モデルとして記述し,その計算法を開発した.数値実験の結果,対象集団内の個人間交流関係を表す"social network"の構造が,地域通貨普及のcritical factorになりうることが判った.より具体的には,social network構造に"small world性"がある場合,地域通貨が普及状態となる確率が有意に高く,また,状態収束も速いことが示された.
