第1段階として,報告者自身の援助データを分析の対象として,抽出した「変化した自己意識の意味」の継時的な流れを何度も見直しながら,その流れの中で,「変化した自己意識の意味」が質的に変化するところで区切り,区切り毎の性質を発達的視点から読み取って命名した.3事例における自我発達の6側面すべてにおいて,このような事例ごとの分析を行った後,3事例を統合して,自我発達の6側面それぞれにおける発達段階を明らかにした.同様に,そのような自我発達を支援する援助の性質を具体的な行為におろし,援助の評価視点を明らかにした.この自我発達の発達段階を踏まえたアセスメント視点および援助の評価視点を下に,アセスメントと援助評価のチェックリストを作成した.作成したチェックリストは,精神科看護の専門家や臨床管理者,臨床看護師に意見を求めて,用語や内容の洗練に努めた.第2段階では,作成した2種類のチェックリストの有用性を確かめるため,臨床看護師3名に対し,慢性的な統合失調症患者の選定を依頼し,各看護師が選定した患者の援助に1日同伴し参加観察した.看護師と患者のやり取りはフィールドノートに書き留めた.日勤帯終了後,チェックリストにそって1時間半〜2時間のインタビューを実施.インタビューはテープに取り逐語録にした.示唆性,簡明性,網羅性の点から内容を分析し有用性を検討した.その結果,患者の自我発達の位置や特徴が把握できること,援助の方向性や自我発達から見た意味づけができること,不足していた援助に気づくなど示唆性のあることが明らかとなった.その一方で,表現の難解さ,不適切な部分など簡明性に課題のあること,また受動型の患者の発達という点では,若干網羅性に問題のあることが明らかとなった.
