本年度は、昨年度からの継続調査課題として、(1)現代社会における「自らのもの(血縁性=filiation)」と主張できない文化を表象するときに直面する困難と、その困難を乗り越えるためのモデルとなる文化生産の様態を、植民地主義が残存する歴史的文脈で理解した。具体的には、79年に死去したフランス人芸術家ジャン・シャルロー(Jean Charlot)が、ハワイ州ホノルル市を中心に残した壁画-労働組合の建物、教会、大学、その他の公共の建物-が、現在多文化主義がエートスとして広がっているハワイ社会において、どのような評価を生んでいるかを検討した。シャルローの壁画の多くは、ハワイ先住民たちの文化を描写している。70年代に入り、土地回復運動などに代表される先住民運動は、しばしば排他的傾向も見せている。シャルローは、ハワイ文化を「自らのもと」とは呼べない立場から、表象をおこなったことになる。しかし、今回のインタビュー調査から明らかになったのは、多くのハワイ(人)先住民芸術家や言語や文化研究家たちが、シャルローの残した仕事を高く評価していることである。その理由は、彼がそれらの作品を創った時代がいまだ先住民運動が過激に展開していなかったからではなく、シャルローの芸術創作へのアプローチが言語習得やパフォーマンス(演劇)をとおして対象文化の内側から創造するという、いわば「親和性(=affiliation)」をモデルにしているからである。本研究の結果は、分断された社会において、多文化主義は分離や隔離に帰着しがちであるとき、芸術をとおして他者への接近が可能である具体的モデルを提供する。
