Analysis and Development of Computer Fonts Easy to See for Children with Low Vision.

This was three-year research project aiming at the analysis of computer fonts that can be used conveniently in educational setting and, at the same tim, are easy to see for children with low vision. Based on the analysis, fonts were developed on an experimental basis.The research was carried out from three different approaches.A.Analysis of fonts through simulated condition of low vision :The decline in contrast senditivity was simulated and its effect on reading efficiancy was examined. The decline in contrast sensitivity is caused by cloudy ocular media due to such disease cataract and corneal leukoma and it results in the impediment to visibility. A checklist was mede to evaluate the simulated decline in contrast sensitivity. Another checklist was also made to evaluate the readability of different fonts.B.Analysis of factors that influence the reading of children with low vision :The font is not the sole factor that influence the reading efficiency in children with low vision. Unless other factors are clarefied, the influence of fonts cannot be specified. For this reason, different font sizes and presentation conditions such as the length of a line were examined to see the effect on reading efficiency.C.Research on the measurement of reading efficiency of children with low vision :Different methods of measuring the influence of fonts on the efficiency of reading were examined. As a result, in order to make effective evaluation, a new evaluation system using computer was developed on an experimental basis to measure the reading efficiency of people with low vision. Improvements were made on the system after trials.
