本研究の目的は、語り物音楽の教育的意義と可能性を明らかにすることである。研究対象は語り物音楽の中でも特に人形浄瑠璃に絞った。本研究では二つの方法を採った。第一に、学校教育の一環として人形浄瑠璃の指導に取り組んでいる事例の研究である。第二に音楽学、歴史学を背景として、人形浄瑠璃の教育的意義や可能性に関わる文献を史料収集しその分析をすることである。本研究の具体的内容は、第一に人形浄瑠璃の教育に取り組んできた43の学校についての調査である。人形浄瑠璃に取り組んでいる学校は、関東以西に幅広く分布していた。中学校・高校に比べて小学校で取り組んでいるところがやや多く、数十年以上の歴史を持つ学校が半数近かった。授業よりもクラブや部活動で取り組んでいる学校が多く、1演目にのみ取り組んでいる学校が約半数だった。人形浄瑠璃の指導に関わっている教員から人形浄瑠璃の教育的意義について聞き取り調査を行った。その結果、「忠や義、親孝行、貞愛など人の道を学ぶ」「情や愛など人間の普遍性にふれる」「後継者育成」「文化への理解が広まる」「自尊感情が深まる」「豊かな情景描写、感情表現ができるようになる」「心の幅が広がる」「心が安定する」「自己表現ができる」などの回答を得た。第二に文献史料調査の結果、浄瑠璃は老若男女に仏法を会得さすべく平易に作られ、文字が読めない寒村僻地の人々に到るまで、娯楽的楽しみの中に知らず知らずのうちに精神修養の資となり、武士道精神、道義的精神を身につけさせるものと捉えられていた。浄瑠璃は単なる遊芸ではなく、自然な感化力をもつものと考えられていた。このように、浄瑠璃の愛好者の言葉から語り物音楽の教育的意義と可能性にせまったのは本研究が初めてである。音楽科では日本の伝統的な音楽が重視されるようになっており、語り物音楽の重要な一角である浄瑠璃を教育している諸学校の取り組みを明らかにした本研究は、語り物音楽の教育的意義と可能性を明らかにするための第一歩として重要な意義を持つと考える。
