熊本で創業し全国市場に展開している中堅企業10数社をサンプルとして、地方都市を本拠とすることの利点および不利点を、聞き取り調査によって解明しようとした。本調査研究では、とくに首都圏市場で競争する際の利点・不利点に焦点を絞り、インタビューは熊本本社と東京支店または本社で行われた。サンプル数が少なく聞き取りデータを通じての感触でしかないため、あくまで仮説として提示したいが、地方立地の利点・不利点はいくつかの要因によって顕在化のパターンが異なるらしいことが明らかになった。それらの要因とは、大きく分けて(1)情報関連要因と(2)コスト関連要因である。情報関連要因はさらに、【.encircled1.】顧客の種別・【.encircled2.】オペレーションの構造・【.encircled3.】先端科学技術情報の重要度・【.encircled4.】市場地位・【.encircled5.】競合状況に分類され、コスト関連要因は【.encircled1.】輸送コスト・【.encircled2.】採用コストである。それぞれの要因について、地方立地の便益との関連性を考察すると、以下のような一連の仮説が導き出される。ここで「地方立地の便益」とは、主として地代・人件費・福利厚生費の安さと労働者採用の容易さである。1-1顧客の種別:最終消費者を対象とする度合いが高いほど、地方立地の便益が高まる。1-2オペレーションの構造:構造が単純であるほど、地方立地の便益が高まる。1-3先端科学技術情報の重要度:先端情報の重要度が低いほど、地方立地の高まる。1-4市場地位:市場地位が高いほど、地方立地の便益が高まる。1-5競争状況:業界での競争が緩やかであるほど、地方立地の便益が高まる。2-1製品の輸送コスト:輸送コストの割合が低いほど、地方立地の便益が高まる。2-2労働者の採用コスト:一般に採用コストが高いほど、地方立地の便益が高まる。
