(1)日本語と英語を同時に習得しつつあるバイリンガル児(研究対象者T)の1年間(9才)の言語的・認知的発達の過程を、日本語及び英語の両面から記録し、分析のためのデータを収集した。・日本語に関しては小学校3年生レベルの総合的な言語運用能力(聞く、話す、読む、書く)を伸ばす手立てを行った。インプットとして日本の歴史、世界の地理、算数の不思議等の学習参考書の「読み聞かせ」を毎日行い、日本語だけでなく各教科の内容の理解も並行してバランスよく伸ばすことを実践した。・英語の習得に関しては、家庭に於て、一親一言語を継続して実践し、英語の聞き・話し読み・書きの能力の向上の過程を記録し文字化した。米国の小学校教科書(算数、理科、社会)及びビデオ教材を用いて、英語による各教科内容の理解力を伸ばすことを実践した。また、英語の少女物語シリーズの読解、聴解による映画スクリプトの修正作業、英語ジャーナル書き、物語の創作等を毎日行い記録していった。・英語の文法構造の習得の実際をBilingual Syntax Measure II(英語版)を用いて測った。(2)バイリンガル教育がモノリンガル教育以上に、二言語の能力を向上させるという先行研究の調査(米国、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド)を行い、英語と日本語の同時習得が、相乗効果をもたらすことを確認し、国際化時代に必要な児童・生徒の言語教育のあり方について検討した。(3)バイリンガル児Tの1〜3才期の日本語及び英語発話のデータをもとに、ホール・ランゲージのアプローチによる言語習得が極めて効果的であることを示した。
