(1)日本語と英語を同時に習得しつつあるバイリンガル児(研究対象者T)の1年間(10才)の言語発達の過程を、日本語及び英語の両面から記録し、分析のためのデータを収集した。・日本語に関しては小学校4年生レベルの総合的な言語運用能力(聞く、話す、読む、書く)を伸ばす手立てを行った。日本語のインプットとしては、学校生活で十分得られるが、さらに、今年度は少年少女世界文学全集の中から、『ああ無情』、『宝島』等の「読み聞かせ」を毎日継続して行い、日本語の学力の向上がどのように進むかを毎日の日誌(ジャーナル)として資料化した。・英語の習得に関しては、家庭に於て、一親一言語を継続して実践し、英語の聞き・話し読み・書きの能力の向上の過程を記録し文字化した。米国の小学校教科書(社会科、文学選集を用いて、英語による各教科内容の理解力・表現力を伸ばすことに努めた。また、英語の読解力を伸ばすため、少女物語シリーズBaby Sitters Clubのスピード黙読を、聴解力を伸ばすため音声テープによる映画スクリプトの修正作業を自主的に行う学習態度を養った。さらに、英文ワープロによるジャーナル(日誌)書き・創作物語作りを毎日継続して行い、そのデータを英語母語話者の協力を得て、正用・誤用のチェックを行った。・10.5才の時点で、研究対象者が自ら進んで英検2級を受験し、合格、2級の運用能力が身に付いていることが認定された。(2)バイリンガル教育がモノリンガル教育以上に、二言語の能力を向上させるという先行研究の調査(米国及びカナダ)を行った。また研究対象者Tの持っている自律能力と意欲を最大限に助長しながら英語と日本語の同時習得を進めることによって、二言語同時習得の相乗効果を確認した。(3)バイリンガル児Tの1〜3才期の日本語及び英語発話のデータをもとに、日英語コード切り替えは、不十分な言語体系の習得による混乱に由来するのではなく、2つの言語体系を同時に習得し、場面に応じて適切に使い分けていることを明らかにした。
