本研究は、戦前期(明治中期〜昭和初期)を対象に、日本における近代化エートスの形成において、経済学の研究・教育がどのような関連をもったのかを明らかにしようとしたものである。研究期間は平成15〜16年度の2年間であり、うち初年度は、対象時期における経済学ならびに関連する社会思想・哲学に関する主要著作を中心とした文献収集・整理を行なった。また、当時の経済学の研究・教育の中心を担った高等商業学校(神戸高等商業学校・小樽高等商業学校・和歌山高等商業学校)に保管されている学内誌・同窓会誌・授業概要等に掲載された教員・学生・卒業生の論文・随筆・座談会記録等を収集、当時の教員(研究者)・学生の経済学観・経済学への期待・教育成果などの分析のための基礎資料とした。平成16年度は、本務の都合により出張予定が組み難かったため、文献の解読を中心に、大正期を中心に置いて研究を実施した。これは、この時期が、日本の近代化・産業化の目途がつけられ、さらに1920年代に入り、アメリカ合衆国と同様の、都市中産階級を中心にした消費社会の形成とそれに伴う高等専門教育の普及が、経済学の一般への受け入れられ方や知的位置付けにどのような結果をもたらしたのかを考察するためである。本研究によって明らかになった事柄の詳細については、現在、整理・分析の最中だが、いくつかの論点を示せば、明治末期からの青年層における「個」の自覚の高まりは、しばしば経済学を実利的成功を期待させるものとしたが、他方で、哲学的関心を軸とする教養主義の流行の中で、経済学が、学生・中堅勤労者層における社会認識の深化・洗練化に対して一定の役割を担った点が注目されるべきであると思われる。これらの論点については、精緻な形で取りまとめた上で、できるだけ早い時期に論文等の形で公表する予定である。
