Manly, Robertson, Anderson, & Nimmo-Smith(1999)が開発したTest of Everyday Attention for Children(以下,TEA-Chと略す)を参考とし,(1)注意が単一ではなく複数の機能から構成されているとみなす理論的枠組みに立脚し,(2)児童・生徒に親しみやすい刺激材料や課題を使用し,検査の生態学的妥当性に配慮している集団式注意機能検査バッテリーを作成した。検査バッテリーは,4種の下位検査(地図探し,音数え,指示動作,二重課題)から成っており,それぞれ異なる注意機能(つまり,選択的注意,持続的注意,反応抑制,注意分割)の査定を意図している。この検査バッテリーを小集団トレーニングプログラムに参加を希望したADHD児童に実施したところ、どの児童にも共通して平均より劣っているのは持続的注意の指標であった。このことから,小集団トレーニングプログラムでは,持続的な注意の改善を基本の目標に据え、行動管理の原則を用いるとととした。バークレー(2002)では、AD/HDを有する子どもの行動管理の原則として、即時的で頻繁なフィードバックと目立つ結果、否定の前の肯定、一貫性の保持を挙げている。このプログラムでも、これらの行動管理の原則を守り,子どもが学習や遊びの場面でつまずいた時に担当者がすぐに対応し、できないことを叱るのではなくできたことを誉めるようにし、がんばってシールをためると誉めてもらってご褒美がもらえるよう設定した。小集団トレーニング開始時と終了時の行動観察(生起頻度の評定)から,児童の立ち歩く回数が減り衝動的に発話することが減っていったことが確認された。また開始時と終了時および終了後2ヶ月の保護者の行動評定から,話し合いの態度や協調性,望まない状況での対処や決めたことへの取り組みが以前よりできるようになり効果が維持されたことが明らかになった。
