During early postnatal life, neuronal circuits in the mammalian cortex are actively sculptured byactivity. However, the specific patterns of activity (endogenous and exogenous) and their roles remainobscure. Our preliminary in vivo data indicate that neurons in primary sensory cortices of young miceexhibit during the first 2-3 postnatal weeks a new type of correlated activity, namely spontaneous Ca2+waves recurring with a frequency in the sub-delta range (0.1-0.5 Hz). The aim of this project is tocharacterize these sub-delta Ca2+ waves and to elucidate their specific roles for gene expression andfor maturation of cortical circuits.
