Mammalian semen contains biologically active substances or factors.Their dynamic status and significance in reproductive physiology, however, are not yet well understood. This study focussed to the two sorts of compounds, phospholipase A and inhibin which were known to occur in the seminal plasma of some farm animals. Our earlier observation has presented an evidence that the bull seminal plasma can induce a morphological change in the cell membrane. Since this activity was assumed to involve phospholipase A action, a comparative estimation of the enzyme activity was made with bull, boar and human seminal plasma. When used phosphatidylcholine as substrate, the phospholipase A activity in bull seminal plasma was the highest among the materials from the three species. The effect of bull seminal plasma on the sperm membrane was investigated with the methods of cytochemistry and immuno-electron microscopy, including Concanavalin A and cationized ferritin bindings, lactate and malate dehydr … More ogenase activities, and sperm motility. We found that the bull seminal plasma had a similar activity in part to that of a medium for in vitro fetilization on the epididymal spermatozoa. The results suggest that the bull seminal plasma may have a capacitation-accelerating factor. Futher study should be necce-ssary for the conclusion, including contribution of the enzyme.The inhibin activity of seminal plasma was estimated, mainly with the material from goat to investigate some biological and physico-chemical properties. We confirmed that in the goat at least, seminal inhibin originated exclusively from testis and the physico-chemical properties were not principally different between them. It showed a distinct seasonal fluctuation in a close relation to blood FSH levels.The enzyme activity of testicular fluid decreased during the passage of epididymis and in the process of ejaculation. Molecular weight of the testicular extracts was estimated to be about 14,000.
