This study was to investigate the effects of malnutrition during raising sttage on bone growth of calves at subsequent stage. Principal results were as follows:1. Relationships betwwn bone growth and blood constitutents were examined to find the estimation method of the degree of bone growth of living animal without killing. It was concluded that the estimation of bone growth by blood constituents of living animal was very difficult, while there were some correlations between bone growth and calcium or thyroxine levels in blood.2. The method to estimate the bone growth directly in living animal was examined. Morphological growth of bone was estimated by X ray examination, but microdensitometer was necessary to measure the bone density. X ray apparatus and mirodensitometer for human diagnosis was too small for calves, but was useful to estimate the bone growth of lamgs.3. Malnutrition on raising stage of lambs depressed the growth of bone length and bone width. These effects continued for long time even though feed was changed to normal nutritional level. Pregnancy and delivery also depressed the bone growth. Bone density was higher on malnutritional condition than normal condition. of lambs, and was not affected by pregnancy and delivery.4. Blood thyroxine level was depressed by malnutrition in calves and rats. Injection of thyroxine to malnutrition rats did not affect to bone growth. It was suggested that depression of bone growth by malnutrition was not depended only by the thyroxine deficiency.
