To evaluate the biological or biochemical effect of smoking and passive smoking to man quantitatively, we determined aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase(AHH) activity in lymphocytes of 111 male smokers, including 36 nonsmokers, and 128 male passive smokers. Basal and 3-methyl-cholanthrene(MC) -induced AHH activity and AHH induction ratio(Basal/MC-Induced) varied so much individually, and were of very wide range. We examined statistically the effect of smoking and passive smoking on AHH, taking the effect of other environmental factors such as drinking, coffee intake, habitual use of medicines and so forth on AHH into account. Among the environmental factors examined, coffee intake showed the significant, positive correlation to the enzyme activity, but smoking and passive smoking did not. We, however, observed that the amount of smoking increased in positive proportion to that of coffee intake(r=0.45, p<0.0001). Therefore from a biological or practical point of view, both coffee intake and smoking seemed to enhance the AHH activity and the effect of coffee intake on AHH was considered to be more than that of smoking. In addition, results of the preliminary study in health consequences of smoking and passive smoking showed that smoking and passive smoking exhibited no significant effect on the condition of health such as subjective symptoms, present sicknesses, histories of sickness, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. Drinking showed the significant, positive correlation to the blood pressure. Based on the results of the study, effect of smoking and passive smoking on AHH activity was considered to be much less than we expected, and bad effects of those for the condition of health studied seem to be much less than we have considered. Furthermore, coffee intake and drinking seem to induce much more biological effects than we have thought.
