Virological and Clinicopathological Study on Non-A,non-B Hepatitis

Non-A,non-B hepatitis virus(es) has not yet been identified. This study was to investigate the etiological agent(s) of non-A,non-B hepatitis in a special way hitherto not reported. We have tried to detect the virus(es) in the hepatocytes and lymphocytes of primary culture after being obtained from patients with non-A,non-B hepatitis, However, until now we could not find any responsible agent by this method. Further modifications of the culture medium or culter conditions seem to be needed.Next, the epidemiological study on viral hepatitis revealed that the prevalence of non-A,non-B hepatitis was the highest among the acute sporadic viral hepatitis, that accounted for approximately 40 % of them, and posttransfusion hepatitis was exclusively of non-A,non-B hepatitis so far experienced over the past 2 years. Non-A,non-B hepatitis of both sporadic and posttransfusion category was found not infrequently to have a chronicity. However, the longitudinal follow-up study for these patients revealed that they did not show a rapid progression to cirrhosis as observed in some of the patients with chronic hepatitis type B. Further longer follow-up study will be needed to clarify the long-term outcome of these patients.
